"The
SAU are completely opposed to the proposed takeover of Tramway 2, and
will make every effort to prevent this from happening. . We are also in
full
support of the many organisations and individuals who have already done
so much to
raise awareness, and challenge this proposal.....we will be presenting
our total opposition to this development, on behalf of the Artists Union,
and the wider arts community."
Guyan Porter, Scottish Artists Union scottish.artists.union@ecosse.net
I was saddened to hear of plans to shut down Tramway art.It is
a venue I have visited on many occasions, for both music and the arts.As
a resident of the south side I am proud to have it on my doorstep,it is
a venue I make a point of taking visiting friends to.(nobody has ever
been disappointed, UNTIL NOW!!) If Tramway art shuts down, It wont be
just the art world who will be missing out,nor will it be just my friends,
but Glasgow and its people as a whole..
Mr Robert Smith, 48 Inglefield st, Govanhill
"I wish
to express my opposition to the clouse of Tramway, Glasgow's contemporary
art-program, and my support to Tramway."
Miren Eraso, Director of Zehar magazine, Arteleku,
Gipuzkoa, Spain, www.arteleku.net
"I'm a New York artist recently permanently relocated to
Glasgow. I am deeply saddened by the Tramway issue as it is one of a handful
of places here for a huge vibrant stellar arts community -- as you know,
it is well known, watched and visited by many people from the international
community -- the far-reaching impact of this local decision is quite vast."
Susan Black
"In favor of retaining Tramway as a visual arts venue"
Javier
Peres, Director, peres projects, Los Angeles, USA,www.peres-projects.com
"the same reactions everywhere in Europe...in so many edges...the
same shortminded forms of "saving money in the peak of intelligent
- longer determined spots" of the great cultural body - western nations...represent.
I hope for a change of minds..."
Thomas Bayrle, artist, Frankfurt
"As a music critic, my view is that all art
forms are necessary for humanity and tramway is an invaluable asset for
the community for presenting the visual arts."
Garth Cartwright,
Southampton Way, London
"Timothy Hutchings (artist) and Amanda Sherwood (filmmaker)
of Brooklyn, New York protest from their residence at 252 Java, Brooklyn."
"Can something be worked out?"
Connie

"Tramway is a huge space with a huge reputation, to allow it to close
would be a huge loss."
Eoghan McTigue, Berlin
I support the argument to save Tramway2 for the exhibition
of visual art.
Riccardo IACONO media artist, Glasgow
Tramway is unique not only for its achievements but also
for its potential.
Growing up just off Albert Drive, I remember one day queues of people
right up the street, waiting with excitement to file past a clear perspex
dome with a piece of rock in it. A little piece of the moon had come to
the Southside, and we were all waiting to see the future. The Transport
Museum has moved on, but the importance of a public space this large cannot
be underestimated.
I felt some of the same thrill at the Pipilotti Rist show a couple of
years ago, a sense of wide possibilities and optimism. Rare but vital.
Gair Dunlop, Glasgow
Tramway has constantly been an important and vital forum, support
and site for emerging artists. without it, the art community loses so
many opportunities it might not find elsewhere.
good luck with everything
Andrew Bracey, Manchester based artist
I support Tranway. Without it we had never
heard talk about the dynamic Glasgow art scene in the 90's and today.
Great energy to fight!!
Peio Aguirre, Critic and co-curator at D.A.E., Donostia-San Sebastián
Spain
I have seen many impressive exhibitions at Tramway over the
past decade and its closure would be a considerable loss. I would particularly
miss seeing emerging artists exhibiting on a large scale in the gallery's
vast spaces. It has so often been a place from which key young artists
have projected themselves onto the world stage.
Angela Kingston, freelance curator and writer based in London.
I am writing to you because an email about the threatened
of Tramway closure has been forwarded to me. This is a quite shock and
wanted to express my feeling about it.
My name is Leire Vergara and I am a curator together with Peio Aguirre
in D.A.E. (Donostiako Arte Ekinbideak) in San Sebastian, Spain. D.A.E.
is a small structure that promotes Contemporary Art in the city of San
Sebastian.
I really think that Tramway is a very important reference in an international
scale forContemporary Art production. Thus, I think the closure of Tramway
is a very big mistake and shouldn’t go forward. You have all my
support to stop this happening.
Best regards,
Leire Vergara.Co-Curator at D.A.E. San Sebastian (Spain)
I am happy to support the campaign to retain the great exhibition
space for the visual arts at the Tramway.
I remember with great pleasure Welfare State International's project that
actually used the tramline to move great towers back and forward. That
could not have been mounted in a conventional gallery. Good luck with
your battle.
Ruari McNeill
"I agree that
Tramway, as a visual arts space, plays an extremely important role within
the Glasgow arts scene, and as artists we should be doing all we can to
prevent this from being taken away from us."
Sarah Forrest, Glasgow
"I'll
try and get the amsterdam chapter of the 'friends of tramway' up and running..".
Otto Berchem, Amsterdam, Netherlands
On behalf of the Fine Art staff at Leeds
College of Art and Design I'm writing to express our alarm at the proposed
closure. Tramway represents one of the few venues that can host large
scale contemporary installation and new media work within the UK, without
this Glasgow will not be able to position itself as one of the main European
venues for ambitious and innovative art work. Artist working in Leeds
envy the facilities built up by Glasgow in support of the visual arts
and are dismayed to see that there is the potential dismantling of a hard
worked for profile as a centre of excellence for visual art. Tramway attracts
many students from Leeds to visit exhibitions and also move to Glasgow
to study. It would be a great loss to the artistic community if this closure
were to be realised.
Garry Barker, BA Fine Art Dept, Leeds College of Art and Design
"As
an artist who lived in Glasgow until recently (2002) for fourteen years,
I fully agree what an absolute disgrace it is about the proposed plans
for Tramway. Ridiculous."
Cath Whippey, now residing in Robin Hood's Bay, Whitby, Yorkshire.
It's a pity that Glasgow is going to lose
such a valuable, internationally acclaimed venue for the Visual Arts and
theatrical performances and it is equally sad to note that no plan has
been
conceived to replace this loss.
Alex Benzie and Anna Recasens
The Tramway
A visual arts venue which has been has been base and developmental stage
for much of Scotland and the worlds artists . The closing of it would
project a dark shadow over Glasgow, via which the World would become a
darker place.
