Artists in Tramway protest : BRIAN DONNELLY
ARTISTS and gallery owners yesterday demonstrated
outside the Scottish Arts Council headquarters in protest at plans by
Scottish Ballet to take over the Tramway venue in Glasgow.
They were campaigning against plans to use lottery cash from the Scottish
Arts Council to transform the large exhibition space, known as Tramway
2, into the new headquarters of Scottish Ballet.
Steve Hollingsworth, an artist, said: "We are just making our feelings
known about our utter opposition to the Scottish Ballet plan to even consider
moving into Tramway."
A delegation of the artists was invited inside to air their views to Jim
Tough, arts supremo at the SAC.
A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said no decision had been taken.
A spokeswoman for the SAC said: "The meeting was a standard review
meeting of the last year we hold with those we fund. A possible bid by
Scottish Ballet was not on the agenda."
