Hi Simon,

I really like the "Cheap Night Life" and "Come To Rest Ones". I agree with the general thrust of comments that the badges need text and image together as they will get removed from the location. The 2 above texts really imbue the images with a sense of human activity or emotion. I think this is why I like them best.

The other 2 have less of a human presence. May be why they don't appeal so much. The "Back to Back" one has too concrete references to back to back housing. The image - though it isn't housing - is red brick so makes me think about this straight away. I notice the tower block in the background and it makes me wonder if it could be more about these 2 types of buildings being butted up together. But I'm not sure the background will show well on a badge.

I very much like the image on the "Preserved" badge but can't make my mind up on the text to go with it. I first read it as "Reserved" as the P vanishes a bit. Maybe I even preffered it as 'reserved' because again it's like there's a human agency who has reserved this space for something or wants to stake some claim over it. I find it harder to make sense of the word "preserved" in relation to it.

Hi Amelia

Thanks for the comments, very insightful as always.

The obvious lack of human presence was influenced by when i started to search the Leodis website archive of images before my first visit. There were thousands of photos of LS11 dating from 1900s to present day and it struck me that very few featured definable human forms.

The Back to Back text was taken from a description of the terraced housing in Beeston, but it was the connotation of both districts and communities coexisting that i wanted to communicate. In the image, it applies for me to the nature of businesses existing in one concentrated site and was again a comment on the quality of accomodation alloted to commerce over residency.

With the preserved badge, this text was taken from the HUV brochure and it was the image of the fortified school and library buildings which i felt encapsulated a notion of education being something that had to be protected from an external force of vandalism. In Holbeck, preservation and conservation stands for investing and rejuvinating old industrial sites for modern applications, not literally keeping unwanted elements out.

With your blessing, i would like to submit the four images and based upon budget restrictions and preference, allow Monitor to make a final selection on the designs. I feel that it has been a very personal journey for me on this project and i dont want my own interpretation to potentially restrict what i think could be a very successful piece of work.

All the best

Si
