Introduction to Monitor...
Born out of energy, optimism and a modicum of frustration, Monitor is a pretty diverse group. We all live in Leeds, we are not all artists. But we all believe in the possibility of Leeds as a centre for cutting edge visual arts activity and we intend to be at the forefront of providing it.
Named after an early BBC TV arts programme, Monitor identifies with the goals and aspirations of this pioneering broadcast. Noted as taking ‘an high view of culture and presenting viewers with information and explanation as well as entertainment.’ The values of the original Monitor sit at the heart of the group’s ethos. We are about providing opportunities, support and putting on interesting art, whilst also looking beyond the narrow confines of the traditional gallery set up. We move around venues, and offer a diverse approach in recognizing the fact that visual arts do not exist in isolation from the cultural activity of the city.
Monitor switches on from the 9th October 2004….
A full archive of Monitor's projects is currently being created and a new fantastic website will be here by May 2007. In the meantime if you want any further information about what we have done, please email us at monitorleeds dot org
